View all

Are Sables dangerous?

Sables are actually members of the weasel family which are known as mustelids, which includes some aggressive and potentially dangerous animals such as the American mink and wolverines, but it also includes the commonly kept domesticated ferrets, which by most lay person’s standards make excellent pets.

Do Sables smell like ferrets?

Ferrets have a musky scent about them. Getting them spayed or neutered will decrease the smell. They also have scent sacs like skunks do, and these are often removed by pet owners to decrease the spraying that they can do when excited or afraid. The most common color is the sable (as in the picture above).

Can Sables be pets?

No, Sables do not make good pets. Though they look cute, they have sharp little teeth and are quite capable of delivering a painful bite. In many places it is also illegal to own one as a pet.

Are there Sables in America?

The American marten (M. americana) is a North American species of northern wooded regions. It is also called pine marten; its fur is sometimes sold as American, or Hudson Bay, sable.
